Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been involved in several issues and controversies lately. In Oct. 2019, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex launched a war against the British media over misuse of private information, breach of copyright and an alleged phone-hacking.
The parents of Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor were also criticized for choosing not to spend the holidays with Queen Elizabeth, Prince William, Kate Middleton and the other members of the royal family.
Recently, Meghan and Harry made headlines again after they announced their decision to step back from being “senior members” of the royal clan. The Sussex couple made the announcement on Wednesday, exactly two months since they took a two-month break from royal duties.
“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” Meghan Markle and Prince Harry wrote on their official Instagram page.
“We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment,” the couple went on.
Meghan and Harry’s shocking announcement was met with mixed reactions among fans and critics alike. English broadcaster Piers Morgan was quick to lambast Meghan Markle for, allegedly tearing apart numerous relationships. Though numerous people do not like him for being hypercritical to the Duchess, the TV personality shared the reasons behind it.
“What ‘empathy’ have Harry or Meghan shown to the Queen, or to Prince Philip, or to Meghan’s father? They don’t care about anyone but themselves,” Piers wrote on Twitter. “The taxpayer should not be paying a single penny to support Meghan & Harry’s new life as duty-free celebrities.
Not. One. Penny,” the “the “Good Morning Britain” co-host stated in another post. "My new @DailyMail column is about Harry & Meghan - the two most spoiled brats in royal history. Posting soon," he penned in an earlier tweet.
Some netizens agreed to Piers Morgan’s tweets. “Must agree with piers . Selfish beyond belief. If my grandchildren treated me like that I would be mortified,” John Alban said.
“I have no problem with them wanting to go it on their own, but they can’t have the best of both worlds and continue to keep their HRH status’ (and cash in on those) and continue to receive funding from the Duchy of Cornwall and security paid for from British taxes! Stay or leave!” another netizen commented.
Even Meghan Markle’s estranged father was not pleased about her decision to leave the British royal family along with Prince Harry. “I’ll just simply say I’m disappointed,” the retired lighting director told Us Weekly in a statement.
Meanwhile, BBC News reported that the royal family is very “upset” after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry proclaimed their decision to pull back significantly on royal duties. Royal insiders, allegedly, told the publication that no members of the clan were consulted about it. It added that some senior royals were “hurt” by the statement.
"Discussions with The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage," the official statement from the Buckingham Palace read, per Fox News. "We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through,” it went on.
