Nicki Minaj’s brother Jelani Maraj has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after he was found guilty of the rape of a child.
The 41-year-old was given the sentence in New York after he was convicted in 2017 for the rape of the 11-year-old.
He was arrested in charged with the crime in 2015. The victim of the rape is Jelani’s stepdaughter, with his stepson also testifying at the trial.
Judge Robert McDonald told the court that Jelani had ‘ruined a child’, which he responded with: ‘I’d like to apologise for the pain that I caused. I had an excessive drinking problem.’
And while Nicki was not present at the court hearing with her brother, a letter from 2016 on her behalf was read by the judge which described Jelani as ‘patient, kind and gentle.’
Along with his 25-year sentence, he was also given a 364 day sentence for the endangerment of a child.
At the time of the trial, the victim was 14 years old and said that she was left feeling like ‘she had no voice’ after the attack.
She also revealed that she is now prone to anxiety attacks.
Jelani was caught for the crime when DNA was taken from the girl’s pyjamas and it proved to be a one in a 291 million chance of a match.
Jelani’s lawyer David Schwartz plans to have the case appealed and described it as ‘excessive’.
Pitchfork reports that he said: ‘There was clear juror misconduct amongst other issues.’
The victim testified at the trial along with her brother who had witnessed one of the assaults.
Nicki herself did not testify but paid her brother’s $100,000 bail in 2015 when he was first arrested and visited him in jail.
